Changes to the coursesite

E-mail Print PDF

I am moving all the teaching resources to the journalism sub-domain (http://journalism.winchester.ac.uk). Also the the teaching plans and timetables will be moved on to this domain, along with the registers/blog pages. The current year one blogs of course will soon become year two.

To find the year one (soon to be year two) blogs simply go to the sub-domain (http://journalism.winchester.ac.uk and navigate to 'BA Journalism' and then to 'Student Blogs'. It is very easier to find - much easier I think than the old coursesite.

If you forget the URl for the journalism sub-domain do not worry, just put in the search term 'BA Journalism Winchester' and it will take you there.

From now on this messageboard will be just that - a messageboard. I've removed the front page log-in for posting messages because it distorted the page and made it look very confusing.

By September everything will be in 'one place' on the journalism sub-domain, and this will be less confusing than the system of having some material on the coursesite and other material on the Learning Network; and duplication. This reorganisation is a big job, so bare with me.

The new first years will start blogging when they front up in September. We will revive the the second year blogs (soon to be third years) who will be keen to do this if they want to have any chance of getting a job.  This page is sort of like a blog from the lecturers. We can interact by lecturers posting things here (and elsewhere on the sub-domain) and students reacting - or adding material - on their blogs; and vice-versa.

As things  are moved over from the Learning Network and the old coursesite I will leave a message on the LN and also will leave a notice hear. Once this tidying up process is finished things will be much easier to understand - not that they are too bad at the moment.

To post a message (staff only) go to  http://www.virtualnewsroom.co.uk/joomla2/administrator/ and log in with your username and password. You then just use the 'add article' button. This is actually easier to use than the old system.

Some notes on Search Engine Optimisation here. This is not exactly part of journalism, but it comes into web publishing and web site production. Background stuff for specialists only. http://journalism.winchester.ac.uk/?page=170

Graham's Tip Of The Day....

Interviewing:

Research the interviewee before you meet them.

Use Google, search social networks etc to find out their history. Most people respond positively to evidence that you have done the legwork.

Third Years

E-mail Print PDF

Jacqui Thornton has passed on some questions.

1. On the WINOL report you will get an email about that.

2. On the confessional interview that is 1,000 or whatever I told you the first time.

3. On the advice on writing the confessional pieces I will give that to you when I am ready to do so and if I think it is worth doing.

4. On the thing you have to write about a magazine it is called a textual analysis and it is 1500 words - it is in the handbook. I gave you a briefing about what that entails previously.

Any other queries about anything like this should be directed to Keith Edwards.

Year Three - features

E-mail Print PDF

Chris Horrie writes: I've injured my leg and can't walk. I have to go to the doctor today, so Jacqui Thornton will lead the features session from 12 noon. I've had a look at the confessionals that I got and I will post some feedback on the coursesite and or email you if there are any major problems. It will be a forward planning session to think up content for a couple of magazines - one female orientated and one male orientated. This won't be assessed for the degree, so you have the freedom to do something really excellent and outstanding.
